I have been teaching English for three-and-a-half years as an adjunct at a city college in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm sure a lot of my journals will be about my teaching experience - who knows. I used to do creative fiction writing but, for some reason, stopped when I started teaching. I'm now writing non-fiction, mainly about being an instructor in the two-year college system. I have never been paid to write, although that would be wonderful, but I have been paid to teach people how to write - a little irony here.
I love to be outdoors; I love the smell of coffee. I want to travel all over the world and, even though I have been to a number of different countries, (places in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, lots of national parks in the US), I wish I could travel as a lifestyle. I don't have any children right now, only because I feel like my husband and I can't afford them and still live comfortably. I'm looking forward to the time when we will be able to have them.
For now, I'm trying to get a full-time English teaching gig, and he's a flight instructor and trying to break into the airlines with no luck. I do feel grateful, however, because we both love what we do - although the pay limits some of our other priorities. I realize there is a lot of good in my life now, and ,when it changes, there are things that I'm unaware of now that I will miss. One paradox of my life is that I long for freedom (travel) but also stability (a full-time job and my own house). Another one is that I want freedom but also to be a mom. I'm not sure if I'm ready for any of the things I think I want- motherhood, a house, a full-time tenure track English job. Right now I live in a small apartment with my husband in the Bay Area.
Who knows- maybe I'll write about marriage, travel, food, nature, gender stereotypes, teaching. We'll see.
